NEWS: VA Doctors Cannot Prescribe Medical Marijuana

The reputation of marijuana has certainly changed over the years, and these days more people are taking time out to change their views of the substance, given its accepted medical uses. Medical marijuana is, at this time, legal in fourteen states – and counting.

States that allow the use of medical marijuana have a list of medical conditions for which marijuana may be prescribed for treatment. In New Mexico, one of the conditions is post-traumatic stress disorder – something that a number of service members suffer from.

One of those is Paul Culkin, who served with an Army bomb squad in Iraq, as shared in an article posted on The Navy Times. He has tried counseling and medications, but to no avail; what did work, though, was smoking marijuana. Doing so is legal in New Mexico; however, Veterans Affairs doctors are not allowed to prescribe it, since it is still a prohibited substance as far as the federal government is concerned. Veterans like Culkin will need to get their prescription from a private doctor.

Culkin wishes it could be otherwise. The 30-year-old is currently the head of the New Mexico Medical Marijuana Patients group, which was formed in December. Culkin commented: “If these guys fought the hardest they could, why not give them the best medicine, or an alternative medicine you can?”

There are other veterans who are all for medical marijuana, and their reasons are no different from those who advocate medical marijuana in general – it is believed that it is a better alternative to popping pills.
